Prêté cette saison au Newell's Old Boys, David Trezeguet n'a pas à rougir de son bilan statistique avec ce club : 28 matches, 10 buts. Mais à 36 ans, l'ancien international tricolore change de cap, et retourne à River Plate.

En effet, le canonnier a indiqué à l'agent Telam qu'il fait son grand retour à River : « Le football m'a fait découvrir un autre grand club, mais maintenant, je vais pouvoir atteindre mon objectif, qui était de revenir en Argentine, jouer et terminer ma carrière à River ». Trezeguet y retrouvera Gallardo, nommé coach du club.
